The arrangement clusters the bedrooms at the front clearly separated from the large open living areas which open onto the paved outdoor area to the north.
It’s realised in brick veneer, with a simple gable ended roof that is cleanly folded at the centre of the house and extended to create a veranda leading to the entry. The raked ceilings follow this fold and are supported by expressed beams that extend externally. Adjacent the entry a circular stair allows direct access to the garage beneath the house, facilitated by the slope of the land.
An interesting feature is the ‘Art Deco’ front railway front door.
The house appears to have been extended at a later date to create a family room.
Ian J. Smith was a largely domestic architect producing modernist houses throughout Melbourne. He entered many of the Small Homes Service competitions, often placing and sometimes winning, as he did in 1966. He also came runner up in the Royal Adelaide House Competition of 1963.
He produced two fine designs for Inge Bros Pty Ltd a major project builder of large homes, they were the ‘Pergola – Split Level’ and the ‘Oregon – Split Level’, two modernist designs that addressed various sloping site conditions.
It’s understood he is still active in architecture.!!!!!!
